An American Fanfare is a work celebrating the United States on its 250th Anniversary. It is a patriotic re-imagining of themes found in Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks in a distinctly American style; martial rhythms paired with strikingly ‘open’ harmonies built on fourths and fifths are contrasted with more lyrical passages set with lush triadic harmonies.
This piece substantially re-apportions, re-contextualizes, and re-harmonizes Handel’s primary theme, itself borrowed from Johann Philipp Krieger (1649–1735). This dual spirit of tradition and reinvention reflects the beauty and strengths of the American spirit.
Theme from Johann Philipp Krieger's Aria mit 24 Variationen. Borrowed by Handel for Music for the Royal Fireworks, and the concerti HWV 335a and 335b.
Caroga Arts Collective programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
1:02:17 across 3 pieces.
With 2 breaks of 3:00 each, estimated concert duration is 1:08:17
